Santa Marta is not so small a city with close to 200k inhabitants, but its old town is quite small, like 5 blocks by five. nothing compared to Cartagena.
Still it is worth stopping there or spending a night on your way to Parque Tairona, you will also find most tour operators in Santa Marta for day trips on land or by boat.
